Celebrating the New Year at Camp Lebanon? What could be better?
Young Adult Retreat happens twice a year – winter and spring – and is a great opportunity for young people, ages 18-35, to gather together into one place and set aside the worries of “real life.” This age group is longing for connection, friendship, and spiritual purpose. Our goal for these retreats is to provide these young adults with an environment to ask hard questions, of our speaker and each other, and to develop community with other believers.
For this retreat, we welcomed our speaker (and longtime Camp Lebanon legend), Rocky Hovda, to talk about the three biggest questions facing young adults today: What is my identity? Where do I belong? and What is my purpose?
In addition to some really impacting chapel experiences, the goal of this retreat was to provide several options for further spiritual growth in specific areas through some seminars and discussion groups. Pete and Becca Mades taught seminars on the topics of Relationships & Dating Seminar and Marriager. Rocky led a seminar on Singleness. We had a seminar on Mental Health with Pamela Rieland, and John Bogle taught seminars on studying the Bible and basic theology. In addition to these specific seminar topics, Rocky and John hosted some “anything goes” discussions which allowed people to come with their questions and thoughts.
It was a chilly weekend (the temp never topped -2!), but that didn’t stop anyone from bundling up and having some outdoor adventures. Some brave souls played Snow Ultimate down on the lower field, while still others played broomball on Cedar Lake.
Aside from the outdoor fun in subzero temps, there was plenty of fun to be had indoors – board games, coffee breaks, video game tournaments, movies, giant Settlers of Catan, and more.
To fight the chill, we had a Luau dinner on Saturday night and celebrated all things warm and sunny. Young Adults lounged under paper palm trees and ate delicious tropical food, while watching some fun activities including a watermelon-eating contest and limbo showdown!
This year, Young Adult Retreat took place over New Years, so what better way to round out an awesome retreat than with an epic New “YARs” Eve party? We cleared the chapel for some dance lessons, enjoyed some snacks and sparkling grape juice, and counted down to 2018 together! If the fun we had at this retreat is anything to go by, it’s going to be a pretty amazing 2018 – Thank you, God, for a really great YAR!
